30/03/2025 Coach - Bolton Bridge & Ilkley

March
8:00 Start with 17:00 Return

Addingham High Moor, Ilkley Moor and Burley Moor with Katie Clenshaw
11 Miles / 17.7km with 1800ft / 560m Total Ascent

Addingham High Moor, the famous Ilkley Moor and Burley Moor are all part of the larger Rombalds Moor. This is Gritstone Country, with crags, quarries and strewn with boulders, many of which have bronze age carvings. This walk is mostly along the northern edge of the moor, so if the weather is good, we should have wonderful views of Wharfedale and the hills to the north.

We leave the coach Addingham, near Hallcroft Hall. From here we start in a south westerly direction, across fields, to reach the Dales High Way, which we follow to ascend Black Hill. Here we take a 5 minute detour to see the view to the west before continuing east along the Dales High Way as far as Swastika Stone.

From Swastika Stone, we turn slightly back on ourselves to climb up to a path that runs along the side of the moor at about the 330m contour.  (I liked this path so if we have a clear day we might climb up to here at an earlier point). We continue eastwards, past Neb Stone, crossing Keighley Road and a few small streams before heading south past Badger Stone to the top of Rombalds Moor (402m). If conditions are wet or in mist we will go via Keighley Road and Whetstone Gate instead.

We continue east past Twelve Apostles stone circle and on to Burley Moor where we follow the Millennium Way towards Barks Crag, then the Ebor Way to the Cow and Calf. There are many paths back to Ilkley from here. The most direct is via the footbridge across Blackstone Beck and The Tarn or if we have the time we may go via Rocky Valley and White Wells (adds 0.5 mile/100ft ascent).

Round Hill with
Sue Banister
10 Miles / 16km with 1,247ft / 380m Total Ascent

Heading north from Ilkley we cross the River Wharfe and join the Harrogate Link to the village of Middleton.
We continue up past Hill Top Farm, Hollingley Farm and Heligar Pike to join a path heading north west to the cairn on top of Round Hill and Little Gate. This is our high point today at 409m.
It's then south via High Black Hill, Primrose Hill and Middleton Lodge back to Ilkley.

Horncliffe Well with
Stuart Arnold
8½Miles / 13.6 km with 1150ft / 360m Total Ascent

We leave Ilkley due south and join the Dales High Way passing White Wells and climbing Ilkley Crags. Along the way we pass Lanshaw Lad and the Twelve Apostles Stone Circle eventually reaching Horncliffe Well.
Here we change  course and head north east over Burley moor on the Millennium Way past Lower Lanshaw Dam to the top of Barks Crag. We then join Ebor Way passing the Cow and Calf view point and The Tarn on our way back down into Ilkley.

The Dalesway with Chris Cook
6½ Miles / 10.5km Undulating.

We alight the coach, hopefully close to Bolton Abbey. From there we proceed to Bolton Bridge where we follow the Dalesway to Addingham and on to Low Mill Village, heading then to the Old Bridge at Ilkley.

02/03/2025 Coach - Hayfield

March
8:00 Start with 17:00 Return

A Walk – Kinder Low & Mount Famine with Graham Hogg
12 Miles / 19.1km with 2,200ft / 670m Total Ascent

From Hayfield, we proceed up Kinder Road and pass the terraced house in which actor Arthur Lowe was born (Captain Mainwaring of “Dad’s Army” fame). Keep an eye out for a blue plaque on the wall which indicates the exact house.

Soon after, we join the “Snake Path” on our left and follow this in the footsteps of the 400 or so ramblers who, on 24 April 1932, took part in the Kinder Mass Trespass.

The ramblers were seeking the right of working class people to roam freely on the open moorlands. At that time, all of the Kinder massif was privately owned by and for the exclusive use of wealthy landowners and their grouse shooting. Some 19 years later the Peak District became the UK’s first national park.

As we reach Middle Moor shooting cabin, instead of following the main tourist (and trespass) route up William Clough, we will today contour slightly left before ascending Leygatehead Moor and summit out at the top of Mill Hill (544m).

From here, heading in a south easterly direction, we descend to the col at the head of William Clough, before joining the now well trodden path that contours the western edge of the Kinder plateau. We follow this, first to Kinder Downfall and then onwards to Kinder Low (633m).

To complete the round, we continue to Brown Knoll (569m), South Head (494m) and then to the curiously named Mount Famine (473m). The hills name originates from the period of the Inclosure Acts (1773-1859) when tenant farmers struggled to make a living from the poor farming land.

From Mount Famine, we follow the descending ridge line towards Elle Bank and then  back to Hayfield in time for refreshments.

We’ll aim to complete the walk today, hopefully without having trespassed on anyone’s land, which of course will be “Strictly Prohibited” and also preferably without any of the group being arrested!

Lantern Pike and Kinder Reservoir with Meriel Nutter
10 Miles / 16km with 1,600ft / 488m Total Ascent

From coach park in Hayfield west along River Sett on Penine Bridleway north up Lantern Pike and down towards Blackshaw Farm. Leave the bridleway for a path south to Little Hayfield. West now crossing to a track then a path over Middle Moor and the shooting cabin shortly after cabin take path going towards Kinder Reservoir following it round the end of the reservoir up to Broad Clough. Follow track south leaving west for a path down to Bowden Bridge and road back to Hayfield. Stopping at the pub if time allows as Hayfield was a bit lacking in open cafes and pubs when I was last there.

Great views of Kinder Edge and the Downfall plus Kinder End weather permitting.

B Walk – A lantern wander round Middle Moor. with
Stuart Arnold
7½ Miles / 12km with 1,500ft / 457m Total Ascent

We leave the car park following the Sett valley trail to Birch Valley and then take the pennine bridle way to Lantern Pike. We then head to Knarrs after which we cross the A624 and follow the path over Middle Moor to the shooting cabin. We then bear right down snake path back into Hayfield.

Chris Cook
6 Miles 9.7/ km with 500ft / 152m Total Ascent

02/02/2025 Coach - Grasmere

February
8:00 Start with 17:00 Return

Dove Crag & Fairfield with Dave Colbert
9½ Miles / 15km with 3.250ft / 990m Total Ascent

The ‘Fairfield Horseshoe’ is one of the Lake District’s classic fell walks and rightly so, and today we will hike around three quarters of it, taking in six of the eight ‘Wainwright’ tops on the round.  Starting from the Rydal Road car park just north of Ambleside town centre, we take the lane to Low Sweden Bridge before climbing onto the eastern arm of said horseshoe.  Our route is along the broad ridge taking in Low Pike, High Pike, Dove Crag and Hart Crag before reaching Fairfield itself, at 873m/2,865ft the highest point on the walk.  We then head for Great Rigg, leaving the horseshoe here to descend to Grasmere, grabbing a bonus ‘Wainwright’ Stone Arthur on the way.

Please note that weather and/or fell conditions on the day may necessitate an alternative, lower-level hike.  Various options are available but unless it’s really bad, we will follow a linear route from Brockhole to Grasmere taking in Wansfell’ ridge and Loughrigg Fell.  This is similar in terms of both length and the amount of climbing.

Helm Crag and Far Easedale with Stuart Arnold
8½ Miles / 13.6km with 2,000ft / 610m Total Ascent

We will walk up the road out of Grasmere to Lancrigg where we begin our ascent of Helm Crag locally known as the Lion and the Lamb or the Howitzer.
We then follow the ridge for 2½ miles going over two more Wainwright's Gibson Knott and Calf Crag.
Here we begin our descent into far Easedale Gill and follow this all the way back into Grasmere.

Grasmere & Rydal Water Circular with Christine & Margaret
7½ Miles / 11km with 750ft / 229m Total Ascent

From Grasmere we go up Red Band Road, then down to Grasmere lake, follow the River Rothey, then Loughrigg Terrace, then crossing Pelter Bridge, Rydal Mount then on to the Coffin route back to Grasmere for Refreshments, A lovely walk, lets hope the weather is kind to us.

Grasmere Circular with Barbara Gilbert & Jan Atkins
5.2 Miles / 8.3km with 500ft / 152m Total Ascent

From car park in Grasmere (toilets 50p card only payment)

We follow the road South East towards Town End to pass Dove Cottage (former home of William Wordsworth). The route then passes the woodland of White Moss Common before picking up the popular Coffin Route (so called as it was used to convey coffins on their final journey to St Oswalds Church in Grasmere). This route follows it to Rydal Mount and Rydal Hall where there are pretty gardens and a rushing waterfall.

The walk turns south to cross a footbridge over the River Rothay before picking up a woodland path which takes you to Rydal Water where we follow the lakeside trail to reach Grasmere Lake passing a rushing weir. The path runs for half a mile. A short climb towards a country lane which we then follow back to Grasmere for refreshments.

Note: There are a few tricky parts to negotiate but nothing too difficult.
